Same Brand, Different Branch — How Much Saudi Chains Vary

📊 183 businesses ranked⭐ 302,008 reviews analyzed📅 Last updated: September 30, 2026
How are scores calculated?

Key findings

  • Across 1,920 businesses in three cities we found 66 chains with two or more branches. The average gap between a chain's best and worst branch is 0.42 stars.
  • The gap widens as chains grow: 20 chains with three or more branches average a 0.71-star spread, and the 7 chains with five or more average 0.83.
  • The largest multi-branch groups are fitness chains — Fitness Time (13 branches), 9Round Ladies and Gents, plus food chains Ennabi Grill and BRGR.
  • Consistency is the hardest thing to scale: the more branches a brand runs, the further its worst branch tends to fall behind its best.

Methodology v1.1 · 302,008 written reviews · 183 chain branches · Dated September 2026

Introduction

You trust a brand because it promises the same experience everywhere. That is the whole point of a chain: the logo is a guarantee. But a logo is not a rating, and when we lined up every branch of every chain in our data, the guarantee turned out to be softer than it looks. Two branches of the same brand, same menu, same name over the door, can sit almost a full star apart in how their customers rate them.

With 1,920 businesses now scored across Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam, we finally have enough repeated brands to measure this properly. We grouped businesses that share a name, kept every group with at least two branches, and measured the spread — the distance between the best-rated and worst-rated branch in each chain.

The pattern: bigger chains, wider gaps

Chain sizeNumber of chainsAverage best-to-worst spread (stars)
2 or more branches660.42
3 or more branches200.71
5 or more branches70.83

The trend is clear and it runs the wrong way for anyone who values consistency. A two-branch chain differs by 0.42 stars on average — noticeable but forgivable. By the time a chain reaches five branches, the average gap is 0.83 stars, wide enough that "the good one" and "the bad one" are genuinely different experiences. Growth multiplies the places where standards can slip.

The biggest chains in our data

Chain (normalized name)BranchesBest-to-worst spread
وقت اللياقة fitness time131.74
round ladies60.47
fitness time ladies وقت اللياقة ليديز61.15
ennabi grill50.76
brgr51.01
round gents50.35
body motions بودي موشنز50.30
wbj40.38

Fitness chains dominate the top of this list — Fitness Time appears with the most branches by far, and 9Round's ladies and gents locations show up repeatedly. Among food, Ennabi Grill and BRGR are the clearest multi-branch cases. Some of these carry very wide spreads: a single weak branch can drag a well-run brand's range out past a full star.

The insight

Consistency is the hardest thing to scale. Opening a second branch means trusting someone else to reproduce what made the first one work — the training, the cleanliness, the pace at the counter. Every extra branch is another chance for that reproduction to drift. The data says it does drift, and predictably: the spread grows with the branch count. For an owner, the lesson is that the brand's reputation is set by its weakest location, not its flagship. For a customer, it means the star rating of "the chain" is a fiction — only the branch you are standing in has a real one.

Two honest caveats

First, name normalisation is crude. We group branches by cleaning and matching their names, which means some groupings are imperfect — a brand written two different ways can be split into two "chains", and two unrelated businesses with similar names could in principle be merged. We reviewed the largest groups by hand, but the long tail is automated. Second, gyms dominate the multi-branch tail, so this finding leans toward fitness chains rather than being spread evenly across restaurants and cafés. Read it as strongest evidence about gyms, and suggestive elsewhere.

What a spread of nearly a star feels like

Numbers like 0.42 and 0.83 can sound abstract, so it helps to translate them. In our data a business at 4.6 sits comfortably in the top tier; the same brand's branch at 3.8 is a place people warn each other about. That is roughly the distance a five-branch chain averages between its best and worst location — not a rounding error but the difference between a recommendation and a complaint. For a customer standing outside two branches of the same name, the logo tells you almost nothing about which of those two experiences you are about to have. The average across the whole chain is a comfort that dissolves the moment you pick a door.

Why branches drift apart

The mechanics are not mysterious. A first location succeeds because of specific people and habits — a manager who notices a dirty table, a cook who plates the same way every time, a counter that stays fast at the rush. Scaling means handing that to new teams, and each handover loses a little. Staff turnover, a weaker local manager, a landlord's smaller kitchen, a busier road with worse parking — any of these can pull one branch below the line while the flagship holds steady. The chains that stay tight are the ones that treat consistency as an operation in itself, with checklists and audits, rather than assuming the brand name will carry it. The data rewards that discipline and punishes its absence, visibly, in the spread.

How we measured

We scanned all 302,008 written reviews with keyset pagination, computed each business's average from its reviews, grouped businesses by normalized name, and measured the best-to-worst spread within each group of two or more. No branch was dropped for a low score; the spread is simply the range.
