Introduction

Cafés in Saudi Arabia live a gentle contradiction: the customer loves the place, but the experience lets them down. With an average rating of 4.28 stars across 182 cafés and 355,427 Google reviews, cafés are a beloved category — but when a customer gets angry, the reason for their anger is specific and strikingly repetitive.

At Raddod we analyzed 2,067 negative reviews (one or two stars) for cafés and came away with a clear picture: décor and atmosphere are never the problem — often they are the strength. The problem is execution: service, wrong orders, and price.

The Sentence That Sums It All Up

Out of hundreds of reviews, one sentence stood out that captures the spirit of café complaints in Saudi Arabia:

«The place is amazing, but the prices are way too much» (translated from Arabic)

This sentence is gold because it carries both praise and blame at once. The customer loves the place enough to want to love it — but the price stands as a barrier between them and loyalty. This pattern specifically is the most dangerous thing a café faces, because it turns an almost-won customer into a critic.

The Complaints by the Numbers

When we categorized the negative reviews by theme, the ranking came out as follows:

  • Service and treatment — 38.4%: The top complaint by a clear margin. Slow staff, lack of attention, and poor responsiveness.
  • Wrong orders — 25.1%: Nearly a quarter of complaints are about an order that arrived incomplete, wrong, or different from its description.
  • Pricing — 19.9%: A fifth of complaints are about overpricing relative to quantity or quality.
  • Taste and quality — 15.0%: Coffee with no flavor, or flavors that don't match the description.
  • Waiting — 8.3%, and cleanliness — 5.1%.

What's notable is that taste comes only fourth. The customer isn't fundamentally angry because the coffee is bad — they're angry because they waited too long, or got the wrong order, or paid more than it was worth. The problem is operational more than it is about the product.

Voices From the Reviews

When a customer complains about the coffee, their description is sharp and direct:

«The coffee is bad, like water» (translated from Arabic)

The description "like water" recurs often, and it is devastating because it strips the product of its essence. A café whose coffee is described as water loses its reason to exist.

And when the problem is cleanliness or furniture, the customer feels the contradiction between the beauty of the place and neglected details:

«The chairs are dirty — the place is very nice but this is an obvious flaw» (translated from Arabic)

Again, the same pattern: admiration for the place, disappointment with the execution. The customer wants to give you five stars, but a small detail stops them.

The Other Side: Cafés Lead in Atmosphere Praise

In Raddod's analysis of five-star reviews, cafés topped every category in praise of atmosphere and seating: 18.8% of their positive reviews mention the vibe, décor, or view — the highest rate across sectors. This confirms that the café's strength is clear and well known.

«Best black coffee in Jeddah» (translated from Arabic)

When a beautiful place meets flawless execution, the customer becomes an enthusiastic marketer. The equation is simple: you already have the place — complete the picture with execution.

Name Your Barista

As in every sector, the outstanding employee gets named. The gracious barista who serves coffee warmly creates an unforgettable personal review.

«Thank you to the employee Shanto, excellent quality and service» (translated from Arabic)

What Does This Mean for Café Owners?

  • Invest in speed and accuracy before décor: Your place is already beautiful — the real battle is in service and the correct order.
  • Review your pricing through the customer's eyes: "Way too much" is the most dangerous sentence you can hear. Make sure the value clearly matches the price.
  • Never compromise the essence of the coffee: The description "like water" demolishes all the beauty of the place. Hold one high standard.
  • Turn the barista into a star: Encourage the personal relationship — the name in a review is the most powerful free advertising.
