Introduction

Gyms in Saudi Arabia carry a strange paradox: they are the highest-rated category on Google, with an average of 4.30 stars — higher than restaurants, cafés, and hotels — and yet 15.3% of their reviews are a single star. How can the highest satisfaction coexist with this much anger?

To understand what drives a Saudi member to quit their gym, we analyzed 2,141 negative reviews (one or two stars) for gyms across multiple cities. The top complaint was not the equipment, not cleanliness, not even pricing directly. It was something deeper: how the gym handles money and membership.

The Lead Story: The Subscription and Cancellation Trap

When you read dozens of negative reviews back to back, an unmistakable pattern forms: the member isn't necessarily angry because the gym is bad — they are angry because they feel caught in a financial "trap" they can't escape. Subscribing is one tap; cancelling is a journey of pain.

«For 7 months I've been trying to cancel my subscription and I can't — worst gym ever» (translated from Arabic)

Seven months of trying to cancel. Imagine the frustration compounding every month a charge is deducted for a service no longer used. And this is not a lone voice — it is a pattern that recurs, in different words, across hundreds of reviews.

«Amounts were withdrawn from my account without any right and suddenly, and when I contacted customer service nothing was resolved» (translated from Arabic)

Sudden automatic withdrawal is the single biggest spark of anger. When a customer sees money leave their account without clear consent, they don't feel it's a service problem — they feel it's a betrayal of financial trust.

«Honestly a trap — they get you to subscribe and then you're stuck with payments» (translated from Arabic)

The word "trap" specifically recurred often. It is a dangerous word because it doesn't describe a passing bad experience — in the customer's eyes it describes deliberate bad intent. Once that image sets in, the member doesn't just leave — they warn everyone around them.

«You must read the membership contract carefully so you don't get stuck, especially the cancellation clause and the penalty fee» (translated from Arabic)

Notice how this last review shifted from a complaint into a warning to others. This is the stage where an angry customer becomes a reverse marketer working against you.

The Rest of the Complaints: Where Do They Cluster?

When we categorized the 2,141 negative reviews by theme, the ranking came out as follows:

  • Poor service and treatment — 29.3%: The top complaint, covering reception staff, difficulty reaching the gym over WhatsApp, and non-responses.
  • Pricing and fees — 16.7%: Closely tied to the subscription trap, as the customer feels what they pay doesn't match what they get.
  • Equipment — 13.6%: Broken, outdated, or insufficient machines for the number of members.
  • Cleanliness — 13.2%: Especially bathrooms and changing rooms.
  • Operating hours — 6.2%: Early closures or broken promises of 24/7 access.

What's striking is that financial and interaction problems (service + pricing) combined outweigh the physical problems (equipment + cleanliness). The Saudi member tolerates a broken machine more than they tolerate feeling financially exploited.

The Other Side: What Brings a Member Back and Builds Loyalty?

In Raddod's analysis of five-star gym reviews, two factors stood out. The first is that 4.3% of positive reviews explicitly mention "renovation" — members who returned to praise a gym after it upgraded its equipment or renovated its floor.

«The gym was renovated — better than before — the new equipment and trainers are excellent» (translated from Arabic)

The message here is clear: visible investment in the space gets noticed and rewarded with an immediate positive review. Renovation is not just an operating cost — it is a marketing event worth telling members about.

Name Your Trainers

The second factor, and the strongest across every sector: customers name outstanding staff and trainers. The warm trainer who corrects your form and encourages without pressure becomes a direct reason for a member to stay.

«Thank you to Captain Khalid, so decent, may God bless him» (translated from Arabic)

A trainer named in a public review is the most valuable marketing asset you own. Train your team on the personal relationship — it is what builds a member base competitors struggle to poach.

What Does This Mean for Gym Owners?

  • Make cancelling as easy as subscribing: Your biggest source of negative reviews isn't your floor — it's the cancellation process. A clear, respectful cancel button saves you dozens of one-star reviews.
  • No automatic charges without clear notice: Send a reminder before every renewal. Financial transparency builds trust; a surprise builds enmity.
  • Invest, then announce: If you upgrade your equipment or floor, tell your members. Renovation generates a wave of positive reviews if people know about it.
  • Turn your trainers into stars: Encourage a culture of personal relationships — the name mentioned in a review is your insurance against the one-star.

Monitor Why Your Members Leave

The numbers in this article describe the market as a whole, but your gym has its own story. What is the real ratio of financial complaints versus equipment complaints at your club? You won't know unless you read your reviews systematically.

Raddod analyzes your gym's reviews automatically and surfaces the recurring patterns before they cost you members. Get your free report at raddod.com and discover why your members are leaving — before they do.
